I start with a drawing on Duralar, watercolor paper or TerraSkin®. Indelible inks and alcohol are pushed beyond traditional sketched outlines. It’s imperative that I encourage the ink to move into a space that advances the intimacy of the individual being sketched. I then transfer this drawing onto glass with glass paints or with glass frit.
Once the portrait is established I embed it with other layers of glass materials and now add color. The transformative process of glass ebbing and flowing, heating and cooling through its layers is akin to our own life experiences. The glass acts as mirror and lens to our lives of connection and disconnection.
All of my work has to do with the duality of “seeing and looking.” —Becky Busi
