Petaluma is 32.9 miles from San Francisco but don't let the short mileage fool you. Highway 101 going either southbound or northbound can be slow at anytime during the day or night. On average you can plan to arrive in SF around 52 minutes later. Santa Rosa is a short 17 miles north. The beach and coastline are about 20 miles and you are mere minutes from Sonoma wine country.

In Petaluma, the summers are long, warm, arid, and mostly clear and the winters are short, cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 39°F to 83°F and is rarely below 30°F or above 93°F.

Petaluma like most all of Sonoma County is a bikers haven. Here are some of our favorite rides from Petaluma, all beginning near the corner of Petaluma Blvd. and "B" Street. The links are to maps created using www.ridewithgps.com. In addition to a route slip, we recommend consulting a good cycling map, such as the one put out by the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, or the Krebs Wine Country Cycling map. Have fun!

Petaluma is accessible to a variety of fitness centers in and around town to choose from including Anytime Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, Planet Fitness and a few local s we love like SoFit Petaluma and Luma Fitness. You will also find your share of yoga and specialty fitness shops in and around town. some of our local favorites

Many road bikers find Petaluma to be a great place to start their loop. A short ride through town takes you out to pastoral countryside where often you’ll find you have the roads to yourself all the way to the coast. Perhaps you’d rather take to the links than the streets? Or sweating it out in the local gym, yoga studio or Crossfit boxes- Petaluma has it all.

Petaluma hosts three lively farmers markets. They're all popular with locals and visitors alike, thanks to mouth-watering veggies and fruit, convivial interactions with the folks who grow them, and the easy-going atmosphere. Live music is often on the scene, as well as ready-to-eat food.

Good Eats

Perhaps because Petaluma sits between Wine Country and San Francisco, two locales known for their devotion to delicious food, we claim more than our fair share of award-winning restaurants. Our agricultural heritage, fertile soil, and mild climate clearly give Petaluma chefs an advantage when creating their gourmet menus. Many of their starring ingredients are grown at nearby organic farms, handcrafted by local producers, or raised at the area’s many sustainable ranches. Michelin has even given nods to Petaluma restaurants including Central Market, Cucina Paradiso, and Risibisi.
